Simplicity v Complexity

“I wouldn’t give a fig for the simplicity on this side of complexity, but I would give my life for the simplicity just on the other side of complexity.” ~Oliver Wendell Holmes Sr.

This famous quote reveals a keen observation about problem solving.   At the outset, problems often loom large and complex but as potential solutions are identified and developed, the back of the complexity is broken and the solution results are surprisingly simple (with hindsight).

When it comes to simplicity and complexity, I’m sure that you can name those in your team who have a wonderful way of bringing clarity to a situation  and others who seem to add to the complexity.

This translates into the way they carry out their tasks, some make it seem so simple, others get tied up in the complicated solutions they fashion.

As you can guess, we value simplicity.  Don’t get me wrong, that doesn’t mean we don’t have an eye for detail but from experience, its the simple solutions that have the best chance of success and the least risk of failure.
